The range of cucumbers is very extensive and lasts for every cultivation- and intended use ready for special varieties.
Depending on the suitability for cultivation, a distinction is made between outdoor, Haus- and box cucumbers. According to the intended use, the range can be divided into, Salat- and divide cucumbers. Pickling cucumbers are cultivated almost exclusively outdoors, but can also be cultivated in foil houses. High-yielding hybrid varieties are recommended, which set almost exclusively female flowers and start yielding early. However, it should be noted, that these varieties at least at intervals of 2 to 3 days to be harvested, because the fruits get fat relatively quickly. Who can only harvest on weekends, should refrain from these varieties, as fruits that have grown too large can neither be used as deposits nor as cucumbers. In this case, it is better to choose a so-called «dual-use cucumber», the fruits of which are well suited for both purposes.
The range of cucumbers primarily includes varieties for cultivation under glass and plastic, but also offers special outdoor varieties. All house- and box cucumbers are virgin fruits (parthenokarp), d.h. they set fruit, without being pollinated by insects. As a result of intensive breeding work, all house cucumber varieties tend only slightly or not at all to develop bitter substances, so that under normal cultivation conditions there are hardly any losses due to bitter fruits.
The varieties known as peeling cucumbers develop very large ones, cylindrical fruits with particularly thick flesh. For use as a mustard cucumber, they are only harvested when they are yellow. They also make a good cucumber when freshly green.
