The cucumber makes particularly high demands on the temperature- and humidity conditions.
It is one of the most weather-sensitive vegetables and, above all, it is very cold- and sensitive to wind. Nevertheless, its cultivation is possible in almost every garden, if the special requirements are taken into account. humusriche, lehmige Sand- and sandy loam soils in good cultural condition are best suited for cucumber cultivation. impervious, wet and heavy soils are completely unsuitable. The heavier the ground, the slower the plant development and the later the start of the harvest. Cucumbers need a sunny, as sheltered from the wind as possible. Special wind protection plantings may be necessary. Slightly shady location is still beneficial, however, an absolutely shady location is to be rejected. All structure-improving cultures are suitable as previous crops, like leek, celery or onions. Potatoes are also good preceding crops, tomatoes, late bush beans and winter spinach. Cultivation after all late types of cabbage is less recommended.
The cucumber absolutely needs fresh organic fertilization and therefore belongs in the 1st crop.
In the case of mineral fertilization, the strong need for phosphorus and potash and the sensitivity to chloride must be taken into account. Cucumbers also prefer a neutral ground response. However, any lime that may be necessary should already be added to the previous crop, because cucumbers are sensitive to fresh lime fertilization.
