The swede is an old cultivated plant and has often played an important role, especially in times of need.
Swedes are quite undemanding, grow very fast, are very productive and keep well in winter storage. They are currently being unjustly neglected, because properly prepared, they turn out to be very tasty – and nutritious dishes. Swedes thrive on all types of soil, as long as they are deep and contain enough nutrients. In any case, a sufficient water supply is a prerequisite, because they are very sensitive to drought and then suffer more from pest infestation. From a climatic point of view, the swede does not make high demands. It is not very sensitive to frost, and the beets tolerate temperatures down to -10°C without damage. Swedes do not need organic fertilizers and only have a medium need for mineral fertilizers. However, the extremely high demand for potash should be noted.
