The fennel, also called Bolognese or onion fennel, is mainly grown in the Mediterranean area, but also thrives quite well under our climatic conditions.

Although still little known to us, this interesting vegetable species deserves a wider cultivation distribution, to which especially the allotment gardeners can contribute. The plants of the tuber fennel reach a height of 40 to 60 cm and develop numerous, leaves arranged in two rows and similar to dill, with broad bases, fleshy petioles. The lower parts of the leaf stalks are used as vegetables, which until harvest a fist-sized, form an onion-like tuber. In addition to a significant vitamin- and mineral content, tuber fennel is characterized by its extraordinarily high content of essential oil. This important ingredient has a regulating effect on the digestive system and has a beneficial effect on the respiratory organs and the nervous system.
