POTATOES IN THE BUCKET

Growing potatoes in planters is particularly interesting. Not only, because it saves space, but also, because potatoes bloom pretty, because snails are easier to keep away and finally, because the yields are much larger than outdoors. Tub culture is ideal, to plant different varieties – each in its own container.

BEAUTIFUL COMPANY

With their strong foliage and clusters of white or soft purple flowers, potatoes in a planter fit very well among the potted plants on the patio. And also in the flower bed, which is not yet overgrown, they look pretty.

The right tips for planting and care

Potatoes thrive best in well-drained soil, that has been improved with compost or organic fertilizer. They grow faster, when they germinate in the house. You put them next to each other in a box (or egg cartons) and put them in a bright, moderately warm room. If the garden soil is at least 7 degrees Celsius has warmed, can they be planted.

As with tub culture, the yield will be higher, by increasing the layer of soil around the herbaceous parts of the plant. In the bed, this is done by piling up the earth. The plant is now also rooting in the upper layers, at the end of which the nodules later form. Useful side effect: The soil is hoed frequently and weeds are easily pulled out. After a year of growing potatoes, a clean bed is left behind.

Potato cultivation in the bed

1 Kartoffeln bringen mehr Ertrag, if they two- piled up to three times during the growing season. That's easier, if the tubers in rows and at intervals of 30 to 50 cm. The planting cord dictates the row.

2 Im Haus keimen die Kartoffeln vor. you will be 5 cm deep in the ground. The germs point upwards.

3 Sobald das Laub welk wird, Are the potatoes ready to harvest?. They are carefully lifted out of the ground with a digging fork and left to dry on the bed.

4 Im Pflanzgefäß lassen sich die Knollen mit der Hand aus der Erde holen. This is gentle and, like a treasure hunt, is also a lot of fun for children.
