Frequent hoeing saves a lot of watering work and prevents weeds from getting out of hand.
Ordered vegetable beds are only chopped completely flat. This creates a roughly loosened layer of soil. In it, the fine soil pores are destroyed. If the ground is dense, the ground water gets through the water-rising force (capillarity) the soil pores to the soil surface. The water evaporates there and is lost to the plant roots. This results in, that it has to be hoed after every rain or watering, so that this additional evaporation does not occur. To get the right effect, wait with the hoe, until the ground is no longer greasy and hoeable. Continuous hoeing also prevents the weeds from developing.
