Since the early 1960s, there has been a greater need for relaxation on one's own property at weekends and during vacations. It is favored by the increase in free time, the increase in real income, also due to the growth in motorization and the expansion of local recreation traffic.
More and more weekend settlements have emerged, combined groups of weekend houses, about 30 to 50 km from the apartment.
The previous construction of weekend settlements has shown us, that the urban sprawl of recreational landscapes must be counteracted. New weekend settlements should be built as close as possible to existing locations; they are set up, where allotment gardening is not possible. The weekend settlers only partly belong to the Association of Allotment Gardeners, settlers and small animal breeders. They use the floor space for individual leisure activities and relaxation. Gardening activities are combined with bathing, fishing, Water sports and hiking or other recreational sports.
