Whether with top fertilization or with nutrient solutions, does not matter. Important is, that neither of the one nor the other should get onto the potato leaves or shoots. This would lead to burns and thus to stunted growth. As a precaution, shower the potatoes with clean water after fertilizing. Manure or other organic fertilizers should not be used on new potatoes.
