Non-slip stairs thanks to sand
"We have thoroughly renovated our wooden staircase and applied the final coat of white high-gloss paint", writes Mr. Schwickart from Berlin. "Now the stairs look great, but our children, who always walk around in stocking socks, have slipped several times, because the surface is so smooth. We don't like stick-on carpet steps or anti-slip tapes and would therefore be reluctant to use them.” Now Mr. Schwickart would like to know, if there is something, what he can do against the ice, without affecting the appearance of the stairs.
And, it does exist! You can make the treads non-slip, by using a trick, common among sailors and boat owners: Immediately after painting, quartz sand is sprinkled into the wet paint. That means for you: At the front edge of the steps, divide an approximately using scotch tape 5 cm wide strips. This strip is varnished, the quartz sand is sprinkled on and lightly dabbed into the paint layer with the brush. Once dry, sweep away the loose sand and paint the strip one more time. How to get a "braking surface", which is almost invisible, because it is the same color as the stairs.
