You can never have enough storage space - whether in the bathroom for towels and washing utensils or as a parking space for decorative plants. These solidly built wooden benches can take a fair amount of beating and even hot steam.
Splinter-free wood for the seat
With its simple charm, this bench spreads a touch of country look in the house and apartment. And thanks to its solid construction, it can be used anywhere and is always ready to serve. Because the good piece can not only – with slightly shorter legs – used as a flower bench, but is just as good as a shelf for towels in the bathroom, suitable as a sauna bench or as a side table in the kitchen. Assembling is easy – the parts only have to be glued and screwed together. For the seat- or storage space, we used sauna bench slats. The splinter-free wood has rounded edges and is made of abachi (Tropenholz). If you prefer native woods, you can also use slats made of poplar wood. There is no difference in quality and price; per meter you have to take with you 9 Calculate euros. Both types of wood are available at hardware stores. Should you set up our model in the sauna, is it recommendable, to countersink the screw heads in the seat, to protect the bare skin from possible injuries. Be sure to use stainless steel screws.
How it's done, we have shown in detail in the work instructions on the right. As an alternative to the version with wooden plugs, you can also screw the sauna bench slats from below.
The variant does not look quite as professional, but it is less complicated.
1 After cutting the squares of wood for the legs and frames, the surfaces are smoothed out (with 60 grit) and the edges broken.
2 Make the holes for the dowel connection in the drill stand using an 8 mm wood drill.
3 Start by gluing the bench frame, which consists of two frames and two crossbeams. If the bench is to be used in the sauna or bath, be sure to use waterproof glue. Until the glue sets (about half an hour) the parts are pressed with screw clamps.
4 Now shorten the sauna bench slats at right angles using the fine saw in a cutting drawer. Then the rough cut surfaces with sandpaper (60he-grit) smoothed and the edges broken.
5 Finally screw it together
the slats of the seat- or shelf with the frame. For use in the sauna, you should definitely use stainless steel screws.
