Discover the colors- and variety of forms of the Japanese maple species. They have something to offer all year round and do not have any special requirements.
The three varieties, available at most garden centers, are far from everything, what Japanese maples have to offer: More than 300 varieties, There are forms and varieties, above 80 Varieties are also available from us (see box). With heights between 50 and 250 cm, unusual growth forms, beautiful foliage, with many varieties also special autumn colors or colored bark, they are very versatile to use. In the bucket, as a solitaire in the terrace, they cut a fine figure as a splash of color in front of dark trees or next to rhododendrons. They don't make any big claims: The location can be sunny to semi-shady, the soil should be permeable and not too calcareous.
Since the trees cannot be transplanted well, location should be chosen carefully and the soil should be thoroughly prepared. Normal garden soil is deeply loosened, loamy or wet soils become more permeable to water with sand or gravel. In the case of waterlogged soil, one helps 10 cm thick gravel drainage layer on the bottom of the planting hole. The care is very easy: The plant gets a depot fertilizer in April/May, sufficient for the entire growing season. Cutting is only possible to correct the shape in summer, mostly unnecessary.
