Many earthworms are a sign of very humus-rich soil.

Earthworms are valuable helpers in tillage. They traverse the ground with very numerous corridors, that of the air, especially the oxygen, provide unhindered access to the plant roots. Earthworms feed mainly on rotting humus. So they can only multiply there, where there is enough humus.
