The worst enemies of the lettuce are the click beetle larvae, called wireworms.
Wireworms have a special fondness for lettuce. They prefer to eat underground, thickened rootstock of the plants and affects both the young and the almost fully developed lettuce. As a result, the plants perish. The surest sign of wireworm infestation is the sudden wilting of lettuce, without the ground being dry. Such plants are to be taken out of the ground immediately with the roots and the earth adhering to them. The yellowish larvae are then easy to find and destroy.
