Most old furniture shows its age immediately – Decades of use have left their mark. The lacquers and polishes of that time are hardly known today, however, processing is still possible.
Do you have an old one too?, unsightly furniture in her attic? If you look closely, you might notice, that it used to be a real gem, so it didn't end up in the trash for a good reason. Of course you have to invest a little work, so that the furniture can be presented again. If it was originally painted, usually simple coniferous wood is hidden underneath. You can give it a new shine with varnish or stain, because old paint can be damaged by heat, chemical paint removers or persistent grinding. Fine wood veneer surfaces, on the other hand, were often sealed with a shellac polish. Today you can only get this material in specialist paint shops and artists' supplies. It is dissolved in spirit and then polished with a cotton ball. A technique that requires a lot of practice and perseverance. It is much easier with ready-made shellac for brushing.
Ten ways – then the paint is gone!
1 Ebene Flächen lassen sich mit dem Exzenterschleifer leicht und effektiv von Farbe befreien. The device is light and can also work on slight curves with a soft sanding pad. In order to avoid scoring, the machine should first be put on and then started.
2 Rundungen, sharp corners and edges can be exposed with the delta sander. When rounding, however, set the “speed” as low as possible, so that no surfaces are sanded into it.
3 Dicke Lackschichten lassen eine Heißluftpistole kalt: With around 600°C hot air and a spatula, you can remove several layers of paint in one go.
4 Kleinere Flächen werden mit einem Dreikantschaber abgezogen. Use it to pull the paint away from the hot gun.
5 Für Schaber mit Wechselklinge gibt es Klingen mit verschiedenen Kantenradien, which can be used on the decorative profiles of old furniture.
6 Chemische Abbeizer, applied with a brush, release only one layer at a time. The work should always be carried out with rubber gloves and with good ventilation.
7 So genannte Abbeizstrips eignen sich gut für dicke Lackschichten auf waagerechten Flächen. They are applied with a brush or spatula and covered with a foil overnight. The next day you lift off the paint and stripper with the spatula (hazardous waste!).
8 Nachdem der Lack entfernt wurde, the wood surface is smoothed and the last paint residue is removed. Preferably by hand, because you can then sand in a controlled manner in the direction of the grain and avoid sanding marks. Sanding blocks with clamps or Velcro are ideal for attaching the sandpaper.
9 Mit in Streifen geschnittenem Schleifleinen kommen Sie sogar in gedrechselte Profile.
10 Wenn Sie beim Schleifen in Profilen mit Schleifleinen mehr Druck brauchen, wrap the abrasive around suitable half circle- or triangular bars.
