Precise measurement is the be-all and end-all of almost every do-it-yourself job. We show, with which measuring tools this works best.

Different accuracies are required for the different work areas. In the garden area are centimeters, in timber construction millimeters and in metal construction at least V10 millimeters is the standard. The measuring tools also differ accordingly.

Tape measures are the ideal complement to rigid measuring sticks. They are usually longer and, since flexible, can be used, for example, when measuring curves. The tape measures for outdoors are much longer but also more robust. The measuring tape is made of either painted or coated sheet steel (to 100 m Length) or from a glass fiber fabric (to 50 m). The fabric tape is very flexible and quite insensitive. The steel band is not curved and therefore has no intrinsic stability. There is a strong eyelet or loop at the beginning of the tape for pulling and tightening the measuring tape.
