Mow properly

With the first warm days, the lawn begins to grow again. Mow with method, so that you can enjoy beautiful greenery all summer long.

Mowing keeps the lawn healthy, because the cut stimulates the growth of the side shoots. The lawn is getting thicker, stronger and more resilient and recovers faster even after a garden party. May, June and July are the months, where you have to mow at least weekly. During this time, mulch mowing is particularly useful. The lawn gets nutrients and moisture back, plus there are no problems with disposal or composting of grass clippings, which is now very plentiful. In August the growth is weaker and in September the lawn really grows again; that means weekly mowing again. The mower will go into winter storage at the beginning of November.

How much the mowing time depends on the cutting width of the mower, can be read from the table. Even if you have a lot of time yourself, think of your neighbors, who will be grateful, if the mower only 15 minutes instead of a full hour. For the correct cutting height, see the table below. Professionals recommend a height between 3,5 and 5 cm. Pure ornamental lawn, cut with a cylinder mower, is shorter. Lawn in the shade should not be shorter than 4,5 be cm, because the grasses have to compensate for the lack of light. In hot, When there is little rain, set the lawn mower a little higher, because the lawn then dries out less. A rule of thumb: Maintain the cutting height once you have found it and never mow more than a third of the growth in one cut, because otherwise the plants would be weakened too much.

Before the holiday, the lawn grows to its normal height (not shorter!) cut. After the holiday, cut it down to the right height in at least two stages.

How the lawn looks after mowing, depends to a large extent on the sharpness of the knives. A few strokes with a file are usually sufficient, to sharpen them. Occasionally the mower should be sharpened in the workshop and balanced at the same time.
