Carports are becoming increasingly popular. No wonder, because they keep the car nice and dry, they are not even that expensive, and the setup is pretty easy. Not enough for us. We wanted to do more with the shelter: a kit with nice additions.
The carport has long since shed the image of a garage on the back burner. Even more: In contrast to the completely closed housing, a carport, which essentially consists of a roof for the car, constant air circulation. This has the advantage for the mobile pedestal, that after driving through rain or snow, the moisture can evaporate quickly, instead of calmly promoting rusting.
A carport, in its simplest form, is now scarce 500 EUR to have as a kit. In any case, this applies to the kit we have chosen (Model „Attic“) from the Brugmann company, which is available in hardware stores. Realizing a carport from A to Z with significantly lower costs, no resourceful do-it-yourselfer will succeed either. And manual skills can also be put to the test with the kit – to a reasonable extent.
The hour of the passionate do-it-yourselfer has come, as soon as it starts expanding, goes to the finishing of the carport. While the panels we install around the roof are also offered as prefabricated accessories, provide the wicker fences that serve as privacy screens, above all, however, the small extension in the form of a pergola with a trellis fence is an addition, that go beyond the kit. This is where personal initiative and individuality come into their own.
We don't want to hide it, that it is in a detail to a – however quite insignificant – restriction can occur: If there are no squared timbers in your hardware store, whose dimensions are exactly the same as the specified material of the kit to the centimetre, then the seams between the kit carport and the extensions can be seen as slight offsets. But who cares? Experience has shown that only the builder has an eye for such discrepancies, and even he soon overlooks them.
Once you've got a taste for expanding the carport, you can of course set completely different goals. For example, the cultivation, which, with its trellis, is reminiscent of a pergola, extend beyond the carport to form a kind of pergola, and possibly alternating between trellis and wicker fences with different patterns.
Ivy, for example, provides attractive greenery for the trellis, honeysuckle (Jelängerjelieber), blue rain (Glyzine), the different types of knotweed (Polygonum), Waldrebe (Clematis) and the wild wine, popular for its bright red autumn colour.
The starting point of our construction project is an inexpensive carport from the hardware store, which we have fitted with screens around the roof for the sake of a better appearance. They are also available as a kit.
Our An- and expansion: Firstly, we lengthened five of the roof turrets, to add a pergola with the help of a trellis fence. Then wicker fence elements were added, which serve as protection.
