In the Ikea catalog you will find Sten as a furnishing system for basement rooms. But why shouldn't the storage shelves also be made into home furniture? Because: You can hardly get cheaper than with Sten. Four ideas for living- and children's room.
Do you really have to introduce it to someone?? The Sten shelving system made of solid, untreated spruce is one of the classics from the Ikea program and that, although it doesn't exude a special charm.
But it has other good qualities. It's very inexpensive. Already for 57 Euro you can get the parts for a high shelf with four shelves and a tool board as a back wall. In two heights (110 or 174 cm) and two bottom depths (31 or 51 cm) offered and provided with rows of holes for different floor heights, The system offers a wide variety of options.
But that's not all. We found out, that there's so much more you can do with Sten. The furniture can be quickly embellished with glued wood panels or lacquered wooden surfaces as sides and with doors, The plinth, inserted drawer cabinets (s. below) and other parts simply complete.
STONE as a sideboard – Three become one The sideboard consists of a drawer cabinet, flanked by low Sten shelves.
Sten is included twice in the sideboard, in 110 cm height with four each 51 cm deep floors (s. also photo p. 7). In between we have a drawer cabinet, also from Ikea, incorporated.
lid (Oberboden) and side panels are off 60 cm wide laminated wood panels. The skirting strips can be cut from spruce boards or glued wood, and finally give 4 x 2 cm and 2 x 2 cm thick strips as a decoration of the front edges of the panels give the furniture the profile.
For the assembly of the Ikea shelves, finger-length hexagonal screws are supplied, which are simply inserted into the existing holes and rotated into the supporting timbers of the floors. Because the protruding screw heads would get in the way of the decorative strips on the sideboard, exchanged at these points for appropriately sized wood screws with countersunk heads. The bottoms of the two shelves should be at the same height, so that the symmetry of the sideboard is preserved.
Once glued wood sides and base are attached, the furniture can be set up. The drawer cabinet is placed between the shelves and a shelf connects it. Then the lid is put on. The sideboard is screwed to the wall, supporting crosses or rear walls are superfluous.
For the decorative strips, the fastening screws of the floors must be countersunk. Replace the key screws with Spax screws.
The side panels will be in the middle of the sideboard 54,5 cm wide and screwed on from the inside. The outsides remain 60 cm wide.
The two decorative strips are placed in the corners between the studs and the outer sides (4 x 2 and 2 x 2 cm) glued and donated. Same with the lid.
Base strips made of glued wood are screwed directly to the floor from below with long screws, 1 to 2 cm receding. The drawer cabinet between the two shelving sections also has base strips and a cover (bolted to the sides).
The cover plate with the glued and pinned decorative strips is screwed on from below after laying and aligning.
