Dowels: Stable and secure attachment

Dowels: Stable and secure attachment.
Work on standard walls and ceilings and on special building materials.

As blankets- and wall mountings, dowels are indispensable. They are available for a wide variety of building materials. Material-specific drilling is important preparatory work.

The size and condition of the drill hole play an important role in dowelling. Is the hole too big?, the anchor does not find sufficient support when expanding, is it too small, the dowel locks when it is hammered in and deforms. The dowel cannot find a hold in conical holes either. If the drill hole is too close to the edge of the wall or next to a joint, the stone threatens to burst when the dowel is expanded. The condition of the wall can be determined before drilling by tapping or driving in a steel nail.

Drill in stages

When drilling deep dowel holes in hard material, a lot of fine drilling dust is produced. It stays in the borehole, it can brake the drill sharply and lead to high frictional heat. Prevent that, by pulling the running drill out of the hole several times. The rock that has been drilled loose is transported out. This is particularly important when drilling in concrete floors.

Drill with or without percussion?

Impact drills make drilling in hard stone much easier. Special hammer drills do this job even better, which do not capitulate even with the hardest concrete. But not on every wall- or ceiling construction material, the percussion mechanism is helpful. Used in aerated concrete (Aerated concrete), Poroton or other lightweight bricks drilled, the striking mechanism is switched off. The percussive drill would not deliver a clean hole, instead, it would grow too large and have ragged edges, in which no dowel holds.

Even tiles can be drilled without the help of a percussion tool, because the drill does not start at the desired point despite center punching – the tile may burst from the blows. must be observed: Switch off the percussion, pierce tile, then switch the hammer mechanism back on.

Carbide-tipped masonry drills have relatively blunt cutting edges. Must be drilled through wood or plasterboard for a dowel hole, This is faster and without much development of frictional heat with normal CV- or HSS drills.

Dowels on the ceiling and in the cavity wall

With special dowels, attachment to hollow structures is also no problem. They open up, tip over or unfold after being inserted into the borehole, thus significantly increasing the holding areas.
