You have the reputation, to be delicate and unsuitable for the windowsill at home. But if you follow a few basic rules, may succumb to the exotic temptation.
Even botanists have lost track of them: Gut 30000 orchid art there are worldwide. No wonder, that lovers of this variety use rules of thumb for care. The most important for the most popular orchids from tropical zones concerns watering: Short and fierce, preferably with rainwater in the morning, then the substrate must be able to dry out again in the heat of the day. Waterlogging, on the other hand, lets even the most robust breeds die in a short time. The substrate must therefore be made accordingly: Permeable and porous, so that water can pass through smoothly. Therefore, beginners should use special orchid soil.
The Persistent Prejudice, that orchids love moisture, only true for part of the plant: The leaves, but not flowers or soil, must be kept moist, for example with an atomizer. They thrive best on the East- or west windows, They don't like direct sun, nor do they like drafts and rising heating air. Another rule of thumb has a calming effect: Orchids are more robust, than they act.
The blossoms of the moth orchids seem as fragile as porcelain (Phalaenopsis) to be, this species is easy to care for. It tolerates room temperatures of up to 22°C and blooms all year round. 1 The Kahnorchis (Cymbidium) develops long, dense panicles. It only needs a little watering in winter and likes the sun. 2 The Pansy Orchid (Miltonia) wants moisture, but does not tolerate wet leaves. It is best in semi-shade. 3 Dendrobiums bloom mainly in spring and winter, then they must be kept almost dry. Spray leaves more often.
Orchids are repotted with a very gentle hand and very carefully. This is necessary about every three years. When the roots are injured, the plant dies.
A good third of the pot should be reserved for drainage. Do not skimp on expanded clay, so that the orchid is dry.
Place the plant on a thin layer of substrate and cover the roots with soil. Tap the pot several times.
