Shelves under the roof

The sloping roof – Restriction of living space or an opportunity, stereo system, To accommodate books and other things? We show you, how you can achieve great results quickly and easily with plasterboard.

The built-in shelf under the roof is always a good solution, to make clever use of a space on the slope. Gallery walls are a particular eye-catcher, that give the impression, to be massive. The easiest way to do this is with a substructure made of wooden slats, which are covered with plasterboard and then wallpapered over.

You hesitate? Do not be afraid of the material that may be new to you. Anyone who is doing drywall construction like this for the first time, will be amazed, how easy it is: You can get plasterboard from your building material dealer (about knob) have it cut to size, so that the panels only have to be screwed onto the substructure.

First and foremost are the planning and the design (drawing). Because this is the only way you can determine with certainty, how much material, i.e. plasterboard and wooden slats, They'll really consume them later. The more precisely you plan, the less scrap will fill the garbage can afterwards. When it gets too much, the recycling center is a solution. Of course, that only applies, when you buy whole sheets and cut everything yourself, as described in the light blue box on the right.

However, choose the option, to use completely cut panels, then you are spared disposal. You can get prefabricated panels at your local building materials dealer. Where this has his business, can be found at Knauf-Direkt, the technical information service for private customers (THAT), under the phone number (01805) 319000 for 0,12 Euro pro Minute.

Have you identified the building materials dealer?, let him advise you in detail. Take the drawings of your building project with you to the conversation, so that material requirements and price can be calculated equally. When the material is there, you go first, as in the work steps 1 to 7 described. Are the walls in place and should they be wallpapered?, so the surface of the cardboard surface needs to be treated with a deep primer. That prevents, that the wallpaper paste is absorbed too quickly and thus guarantees a firm fit of the wallpaper.

How to install the floors and doors.

The seemingly massive slide-in shelves for the tunnel shelf consist of three levels of 1,2 cm thick MDF panels (medium density fibreboard, in the hardware store, for example 12 Euro) and plate strips. The three levels are put together like a sandwich, with the middle layer only made up of four 5 cm narrow MDF strips. That saves weight and money! In addition, the square 1.1 cm mounting rail can also be hidden in this construction, that holds the floor to the upright plasterboard studs.

When you have the wooden components cut to size at the hardware store, it may be, that the narrow 5 cm strips are not cut there. Then order 10.5 cm strips and saw them open with the electric jigsaw. You do not need a side stop, because the unclean saw edges can confidently point inwards, because you can't see them. Before you apply the clamps when gluing, you should fix the board strips to the lower MDF board with small nails. That's good for that, that the strips do not slip when forcing.

Is the glue set?, the edges must be thoroughly sanded, before you paint them. The highly absorbent edges of the MDF should be coated with the primer at least twice, before the top coat is applied.

Have like this wall shelf in tunnel construction. But there is another way, namely so, as thousands of drywallers do it every day under Germany's roofs:
A cardboard side of the plasterboard is scored with a craft knife. This predetermined breaking point is now placed in the longitudinal direction over a roof batten or a correspondingly long object, about one
Spirit level or a straight edge, and breaks it over this ledge. Now the back is cut, and you hold two records in your hands. These must be leveled on such edges with two broken sides. A so-called Surform plane is used for this (here right). It's a plane with lots of small, sharp blades, which is ideally suited, Smooth a broken edge with little effort.
