Veneering wooden panels – Well done

Veneers seem to have been almost forgotten in the age of lacquer and glued wood, but you can hardly get precious furniture wood cheaper. Do-it-yourself veneering is very easy.

They are beautiful: tables, Cupboards and chests of drawers made of fine wood. But way too expensive, and for do-it-yourselfers the material is difficult to obtain. So it makes sense, Finishing wood panels with veneer; that makes it cheap. Veneers are available in specialist shops ("Yellow Pages" under "Veneers" or "Furnierhandel") in all conceivable types of wood.

When it doesn't have to be a table top, you can also use this tried and tested technique in your home workshop. Veneering is traditionally done with wood glue, which is described step by step in the working photos. Iron-on veneer is easier to handle, which is coated on the back with hot-melt adhesive (see wardrobe page 22). You can get it in specialist shops for around 14 euros about 25 cm width and 210 cm long strips, you with an iron (level "wool") on the carrier plate (Blindholz) iron. advantage: Iron-on veneer already has precisely trimmed joining edges.

An alternative is veneering with contact adhesive (box side 26). Particularly large areas can be veneered in this way without any practice or time-consuming pressing. However, it is better to put on larger joined veneer sheets in pairs, because they stick immediately and can no longer be corrected. by the way: Most "noble furniture" is only veneered.

1 Der erste Schritt beim Furnieren ist das Auswählen und Zuschneiden der Furnierblätter auf die benötigte Größe inklusive rund

2 cm Randüberstand. Veneer can be cut along a straight pressure strip with a veneer saw or a sharp cutter (Alu-Vierkantprofile) cut well.

2 Für das Zusammenfügen der Furnierblätter sind absolut gerade Kanten erforderlich. To do this, the leaves are stretched between two wooden boards and, if there are only a few layers, with a cutter, otherwise with a planer or belt sander (120he paper) straightened.

3 Anschließend legen sie die Blätter zum gewünschten Furnierbild zusammen (the professional calls
this joining) and connect them with "joining tape". Simply moisten the rubberized backing with a sponge and press on. First it is fixed with short horizontal strips and then the leaves are connected with a vertical strip.

4 Die Holzplatte (ideal are span, plywood- or blockboard) Apply a thin layer of glue with a fine notched trowel. Pay special attention to the edges.

5 Jetzt müssen Sie zügig arbeiten! Because the veneer begins due to the water content in the glue, to wave. Put it with about

A few layers of newspaper between the veneer and the pressure plate absorb escaping moisture.

7 Nach einem Tag hat der Leim abgebunden, and the edges of the veneer panel are trimmed clean with a flat file.

8 Nun wird das Fügeband weggeschliffen. For softwood with 120, "fine" blades with 180 paper.

9 Erst durch einen transparenten Anstrich mit Lack, Wax or furniture oil bring out the grain and color of the wood.
