CAMELIE (CAMELIE)

Camellia japonica L.

family: Tea plants – Theäceae

Name: Camellia (f.) after Abbe Camellius (Jesuit Father Georg Josef Kamell; 1661-1706) from Brno, who explored the flora of the Philippines and the splendidly blooming tea plant 1740 imported into England from Japan; japönicus, -a, -um years. = coming from Japan.

origin: East asia; growing as a shrub or tree of light mountain forests near the sea.

Heyday: February to April; for sale as a potted plant driven from the end of December.

Cultivation: In special companies (Moorbite cultures) by cuttings; rarely through refinement; by sowing for breeding purposes only.

Care requirements: Lighter in winter, but cool location (at about 5 to 10 °C); sunny in summer, quite airy room. From June camellias can also be outdoors. You feed the pots in a partially shaded place in the garden and water regularly, so that the plants never get dry ball. From the beginning of August, watering is to be restricted a little, so that the annual shoot ripens and flower buds are set. In September you put the plants back in a cool place, sunny room and water more abundantly, as soon as the buds develop stronger. The plants should be as cool as possible until the flowers develop (at 8 to 10 °C) stand. Dry air and excessively high temperatures lead to the buds or flowers falling off.
For pouring you should only use "soft" i.e.. lime- and low-magnesium water (preferably house warm rainwater) use. The repotting took about all of them 3 Years of using soil with acidic reaction (sandy bog soil) be made. It should be noted, that the plant is not set deeper, than it has been before. A layer of coarse sand is always added to the bottom of the pot to ensure good water drainage. The required special soil must be obtained from a nursery.

Special: The camellia is one of the most beautiful winter-flowering potted plants and is also effective during the bloomless period thanks to its evergreen, adorned leathery foliage. If the treatment is appropriate, it can be several decades old, use stately specimens, which bloom abundantly every year.
Of the numerous varieties, the tried and tested one is used as a pot flower ,Elegans (Chandler)' preferred; it blooms double, pink interspersed with white.
