The worm tower

The worm tower

This inspiration is just right for the adventurous gardener, who have a very poor soil and like heavy consumers (Kohl, Pumpkin etc.) want to grow, without resorting to veil artificial fertilizers.

A 12-inch concrete pipe is very suitable as a cover for the worm tower. You can of course also use a PVC pipe. However, it should be "food safe", so that no unwanted residue ends up in the vegetables.

This pipe is buried about halfway into the ground. It is filled alternately with layers of paper, cardboard, Garden waste, fresh manure and rotted compost. Just as if you wanted to start a new compst heap. The whole thing is then "inoculated" with a few compost worms and should "start work" without any problems.

The worm tower is easily secured with a lid and moist, but not kept wet. Every now and then a little more is added as feed, which would have ended up on the compost heap anyway.
