The garden soil

Probably the most important factor in gardening is the soil. Before you think about the design and the planting, you should take a closer look at your garden soil. Sure it is possible, also to plan and work completely contrary to the prevailing conditions. But that entails a lot of effort. Here you have to reckon with considerable financial and time exertion. And even that doesn't guarantee the desired result.

Halten wir uns lieber an die von der Natur gegebenen Tatsachen.

As a floor in itself, is called the upper weathering layer of the earth. It is made up of various minerals and is made up of water, Air and living beings permeated. Special properties justify the differentiation of the soil types into heavy and light soils. This classification is based on the grain size of the mineral components. To get out, what soil you have in your garden, kann man die Fingerprobe machen.

To do this, take some moistened soil and rub it in between your fingers.

Is the grain clearly visible and no longer adhering to the finger, then it is sandy soil. You can't shape it into durable pellets, because it doesn't stick together.

If the sample feels sticky and the individual components are not visible, then you have a clay floor. You can shape it into spheres quite well, which don't fall apart right away.

These are the two extremes in garden soil. The middle thing in between is called silt. Of course, there are an infinite number of gradations between the types of soil mentioned. Different types of soil can occur even within a garden.

This should be taken into account when planning the planting of your property. The plants often have very different soil requirements. You want a lot of joy and little stress, then you stick to their preferences.

Due to the different grain size of the solid constituents, the individual soil types also have other properties:

Sandy soil Tonboden
water It seeps away quickly (good in heavy rain) Dries up quickly (less good in hot summers) Slowly seeps away (Risk of waterlogging) Speichert auch im Sommer das Wasser recht lange
warmth Warms up quickly, Cools off quickly Warms up slowly, Slowly cools down
nutrient Low nutritional content (are washed out quickly) High nutritional content
Is there anything else Is easily rooted, Easy to edit,
hence “light” soil
Is difficult to penetrate, Difficult to edit,
hence “heavy” soil

On frost-free days you should (if you haven't already) mal seinen Gartenboden genauer ansehen. Kennt man die Eigenschaften seines Bodens, one can fall back on such plants by default, who feel quite comfortable there. It saves work, Stress and money.
